Over the past three years, there has been an increasing incidence in the number of child sexual abuse and serious physical abuse investigations. This program will assist the physician in the recognition, assessment and reporting of physical abuse and sexual abuse in children.
Upon completion of this program the participant should be able to:
1. Delineate the characteristic findings in inflicted vs. non-inflicted head
injury.
2. Explain the value of a multi-disciplinary approach to child maltreatment.
3. Describe how to recognize the manifestations of child physical abuse.
4. List those fractures that are highly specific to child physical abuse.
5. Recognize the presenting signs of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.
6. Discuss how to make a hotline report when child maltreatment is suspected.
7. List the possible clinical presentations of child sexual abuse.
8. Describe how to perform a genital examination on a child suspected of being
sexually abused.
9. Differentiate normal variants vs. abnormal genital and anal findings in a
child.
10. Identify the indications for an urgent physical examination in a suspected
child victim of sexual abuse.
11. Discuss how to make a hotline call when child sexual abuse is suspected.
Program length
This program is three hours in length.
Intended Audience
Family practice physicians, internists, pediatricians, Emergency physicians
and other physicians who treat children and families.
