The purpose of this program is to provide professionals working with children, additional and valuable insight into a wide variety of topics on Child Sexual Abuse and Physical Abuse.
Physical Abuse
Explain commonly used tests and terminology in the diagnosis and management
of child physical abuse.
Conduct a child abuse forensic interview.
List the common findings in shaken-baby syndrome.
Describe how to recognize common skin manifestations of child abuse.
List those fractures which are highly specific to child abuse.
Recognize the presenting signs of Munchausen by Proxy.
Understand the medical evaluation of failure to thrive.
Sexual Abuse
List the possible clinical presentations of child sexual abuse.
Explain the phenomenon of delayed disclosure.
Define penetration.
Explain the indications of an emergent physical exam.
Explain why the medical exam is typically normal.
Make a hotline call when child sexual abuse is suspected.
Dr. Dan Leonhardt is an Instructor of Pediatrics; Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Attending Physician, Protective Services Team, Department of Medical Evaluation at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Leonhardt received his M.D. from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He has over 13 years teaching experience, is a member of numerous professional organizations, has conducted research projects, and presented on a variety of topics dealing with child abuse and neglect.
Dr. Marjorie Fujara is an Attending Physician with Cook County Children's Hospital, Division of Child Protective Services as well as a Clinical Physician at Chicago Children's Advocacy Center. Dr. Fujara received her M.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical School and completed her residency at the University of Minnesota. She has over 8 years experience presenting nationally and regionally on a wide variety of child abuse/neglect topics. Dr. Fujara is also a member of numerous professional organizations including American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.
